Registers in Tonal Contrasts

چکیده

This study revisits the issue of tonal registers by exploring the cues used in producing and perceiving the five level tones of Black Miao. Both production and perception experiments show that non-modal phonations are very important cues for tonal contrasts. Two different kinds of non-modal phonations that either enhance pitch contrasts or provide an additional contrastive cue divide tonal levels into several registers. Benefiting from more than one cue, 11, 33 and 55 are well distinguished in the tonal space; by contrast, 22 and 44, only contrasting in pitch, are the most confusable tones. The tonal registers model can explain the different uses of non-modal phonations across languages.

Revisiting the Register Contrast in Shanghai Chinese

Earlier studies claimed that the contrastive tonal registers in the Shanghai dialect of Chinese were distinguished by contrastive phonation types, with the lower register showing breathier phonation. However, more recent studies found that younger speakers of Shanghai Chinese did not use phonation cues to contrast the tonal registers. The different results between the studies may indicate an on...

A Production and Perception Study on Tonal Neutralization in Nanchang

In a production study of tonal contrasts in lexically stressed but grammatically stressless syllables vs. lexically stressless syllables in Nanchang, a Gan dialect spoken in the city of Nanchang, Jiangxi province, we found that tonal neutralization only occurs in lexically stressless syllables. We argue that the main phonetic ground for such a tonal contrast distribution lies in the rhyme durat...

Cross-language comparison of functional load for vowels, consonants, and tones

The notion of functional load (FL) quantifies the role a phonological contrast plays in keeping words distinct in a given language. Several studies have emphasized its potential impact on language evolution and acquisition, and FL has repeatedly been mentioned as a useful tool to supplement phonological descriptions for more than seventy years. It is nevertheless still rarely explored and this ...

Are Pitch Contour and Quantity Independent Distinctive Features in Bosnian Serbian?

This study investigates the independent phonological status of tonal and quantity contrasts in Bosnian Serbian, a Southern Slavic pitch accent language. Accents in Bosnian Serbian are characterised by falling vs. rising contours and long and short quantity, leading to four different accent types. Previous research suggests that pure tonal contrasts are hard to be distinguished on acoustic and p...
